Originally developed in 1917 and fielded in 1918, the Model 1917, also known as the 1917 RSC (Ribeyrolles, Sutter & Chauchat, after the designers) was the first semi-automatic rifle adopted by France. Brought into service late in World War I, a number of improvements were made based on soldier feedback, including simplification of the gas system and introduction of a hold-open device, which can be seen on this example. The 1917 and updated 1918 were phased out in the mid-20s after seeing service in the Rif War, with the majority being stripped of their gas hardware and converted to straight-pull repeaters for issue to colonial forces, often in North Africa. This rifle is rare and unique in that it is still factory original semi-automatic operation. Additionally, a number found their way into the hands of the German Volksturm as last-ditch weapons during World War II. Blade front and folding ladder rear sight, with a "MA T1917" dated barrel. Fitted with a straight wrist stock, numbered to match and dated October 1917, with a flat steel buttplate.

Very fine, with 85% of the original blue finish, showing areas of brown patina, mild spotting, handling marks and edge wear. The stock is very good, with some scuffs and dents, and bsent top handguard. Gas block absent otherwise mechanically fine.
