Description:

This is an exceptionally rare, example of an extremely low serial number "18" Japanese Grandpa Nambu. Approximately 2,350 Grandpa Nambu pistols were made before production changed to the later Papa Nambu series. These are easily identified as they have the large tangent rear sight with the back strap cut for a telescoping wooden shoulder stock (not included with this lot). This extremely low serial number "18" would indicate that it was likely assembled within the first month of production. This pistol was produced under the Army contract at the Tokyo Arsenal and is so marked with the four intertwined cannon balls on top of the chamber area. The right side of the upper receiver has the three small Kanji markings over the serial number "18". These pistols are equipped with adjustable tangent (rifle type) rear sight mounted on the rear of the receiver that is calibrated from 100- 500 meters along with an inverted "v" front sight. As noted the back-strap is correctly slotted for a telescoping wooden holster/stock, however this lot does not include that item. The pistol has the early very small trigger guard with the grip safety on the front grip strap. The extractor and bolt are finished bright and the trigger, magazine release button and locking bolt retainer are straw colored. The grips are the original checkered hardwood versions. It has matching numbers on the cocking piece, underside of the bolt (in two places), firing pin, striker guide and back side of both grip panels. This pistol includes a correct nickel plated "Grandpa" magazine with the large wooden base with the checkered edges. It is matching serial numbered "18" on the lower rear spine of the magazine.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 75% plus of the original blue finish still remaining overall with edge wear and oxidation on the grip straps and grip safety, and a mixed blue/gray patina on the front edge of the mainspring housing and right front edge of the receiver. The grips and magazine base are also all in very fine condition with nice distinct checkering on the sides, some light wear across the tops of the checkering, and some light handling marks. Mechanically functions fine, but will release the trigger guard assembly when the breech bolt releases. A really very nice, high condition example of a very early Grandpa Nambu pistol.
