Description:

The accompanying factory letter lists this pistol with a 5 inch barrel in .45 caliber, blue finish and type of stocks "not listed" when shipped to Midshipman Glenn L. Dunagan, U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, on May 12, 1933 as part of a 7 gun shipment. The pistol has wide blade front and square notch flat top rear sights, a matching serialized slide marked with the two-line address and patent dates on the left side and the National Match nomenclature on the right side, Government Model frame with trigger guard markings "W/VP" on the left side and "20" on the right and two-tone magazine. Correct "circle" around "M.B." marked barrel. Glenn L. Dunagan graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1933. As firearms historian Michael Helms points out in an included research summary letter for this pistol, "Given the proximity of this gun's shipping date to the Naval Academy's graduation day of 1 Jun 1933, it's likely that this gun was bought (or bought for him) to celebrate his forthcoming graduation---a fitting gift for a rising star from one of the nation's leading service academies." Dunagan's naval career included an assignment aboard the U.S.S. Cincinnati and a posting at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida, where he was promoted to lieutenant (jg) in 1939. On April 10, 1939, he and Lt. Thompson C. Guthrie, were killed in a Vought SBU-1 Corsair, an all metal biplane dive bomber, when it crashed while on an aerial gunnery training flight. He left behind a wife and two children. Comes with copies of period source material referencing Dunagan's service as discovered by Michael Helms: senior Naval Academy yearbook page, newspaper clippings, and flight accident summary report.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 85% plus original blue finish with a mottled brown patina on most of the front grip strap and a few patches of light pitting. The grips are also very fine with wear visible on right lower panel, a few nicks in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A factory documented and identified U.S. Naval Academy graduate shipped National Match pistol that will bring added dimension to any U.S. military or Colt collection.
