Description:

This is an excellent example of a very late production Springfield Armory Type 1 National Match M1 Garand manufactured in 1956 with the scarce "X-"Prefix" serial number. This rifle comes with a copy of the DCM, Ordnance sales receipt for the Raritan Arsenal dated October 1958. This "X" prefix indicates that it has a duplicate serial number that was accidently applied by Springfield Armory. All of these "X" prefix serial numbered rifles were manufactured at the very end of production in 1955, with some being upgraded to a NM configuration and some fitted with just a NM marked barrel. These were all basically a late, last clean-up effort prior to beginning the M14 production. This has all the late production SA marked parts that includes a NM barrel marked "SA F6535446 8-56 A228" followed by standing "P" and "M" proof marks. It has a late production bolt marked "SA/Y01" the trigger housing is marked "6528290-SA" , a late SA production hammer, and a correct NM marked operating rod with drawing number: "7790722-RA". It is fitted with a "NM" stamped, wide base gas cylinder, a high hump gas cylinder lock and single slot gas plug. It is fitted with the standard "NM" marked front and rear sight sets with the hooded aperture. The front sight is marked "NM/062" with the rear windage knob marked "NM/CFP". It is fitted with a walnut stock and handguard set with a standard DOD cartouche on the left side with a circled "P" proof in the grip area. The stock is not glassed bedded, however the front handguard is unitized. The stock is also matching serial numbered very faintly inside the barrel channel. It is complete with an original WWII leather sling stamped "BOYT/44".

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% of the original light gray/green arsenal parkerized finish overall showing minor light wear on the edges and high spots, finish loss on the right side receiver rail and top area of the bolt from limited light firing. The wood components are all in very fine condition, showing minimal handling marks from light firing and use with a light/faint cartouche and "P" proof. As noted this excellent early NM rifle comes with a Ordnance sale record from Raritan Arsenal and is consecutively serial numbered to the next lot.
