Description:

This exceptional original Luftwaffe M30 Drilling was manufactured by J.P. Sauer & Sons starting in 1941. Herman Goering, Chief of the Luftwaffe, was an avid hunter and provided the best possible equipment to his aircrews. The M30 Drillings were commercial guns acquired by the Luftwaffe as survival weapons for bomber aircrews assigned to the various theaters during WWII and is possibly the highest quality firearm issued to any combatants during WWII. The barrels have a commercial grade blue finish, and a beautiful, vivid, case colored finish is on the receiver, trigger guard, forend attaching iron and grip cap. The stock and forearm are European walnut with fine checkered panels. The stock has a small German style oval cheekpiece and a black plastic buttplate with the "SS" Sauer & Sohn monogram on the face. Sling swivels are fitted to the under barrel and stock. The barrels have a raised matted rib with a steel front sight with nickel-silver bead and a folding rifle rear sight which can be raised when the barrel selector is moved to the rifle barrel. The receiver, tang, trigger guard and buttcap are decorated with restrained and impeccably executed scroll engraving. The Sauer double S monogram is engraved on the underside of the receiver. The serial number is located on the bottom of the rifle barrel and on the left receiver rail. There is a Luftwaffe eagle marked on the right rear shotgun barrel. The inside of the forearm is stamped with the partial serial number "7883". A "Stick eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, and an "Eagle/N" commercial proofmark is stamped on the bottom of both shotgun barrels, the left side of the rifle barrel and on the top of the right receiver rail, along with a faint but visible ultra-rare small, "Eagle/M" Navy proofmark indicating issuance to the German Kriegsmarine. The shotgun gauge "12/65" is stamped on the underside of both shotgun barrels. "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL" with bullets on either end is stamped on the top of both shotgun barrels and on the left side of the rifle barrel. The legend "J.P. SAUER & SOHN SUHL" is roll-stamped on the breech of both shotgun barrels and on both sides of the receiver. The drilling is complete with the original field-gray painted aluminum Luftwaffe storage case. The case is divided into compartments for the drilling, ammunition, cleaning equipment and sling. The rifle also includes an original leather sling, an original three-section wooden cleaning rod with a brass jag, four different bore brushes and two bore mops all in the original black cardboard box, a small black oil can, a reproduction copy of the WWII factory manual, two boxes of RWS 9.3 X 74R hunting ammunition (approximately 16 rounds total), and a partial box of Rottweil 12 gauge shotgun ammunition containing 9 Brennekegeschoss rifled shotgun shells.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 97% plus of the bright original blue finish on the barrels, 90% plus of the vivid original case colors on the remaining parts, and slight fading on the underside of the receiver, forend attaching iron and grip cap. The stock and forend are both in excellent condition with the stock showing only a couple very minor handling marks and excellent checkering. The forend is in very fine condition showing only very minor handling marks and the checkering on the left side showing a couple of minor/light pressure dents in the checkering towards the front under the barrel. All the markings are clear and sharp. The aluminum storage case is in exceptionally fine condition with 90% of its Luftwaffe field gray painted exterior finish. All the contents are in very fine to excellent condition. A really top quality, high condition Luftwaffe issue M30 combination drilling.
