Description:

This is a very fine and highly desirable example of an early 1934 "K" date "S/42" code Mauser manufactured Luger pistol with an original matching magazine and 1934 dated black leather holster. The "K Date" P.08 Lugers were only manufactured in 1934 and represent the very first German Army Luger contract pistol. The "K" date was the first Luger to use the secret wartime code, intended to conceal Germany's rearmament in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. These early Wehrmacht P.08 pistols have an extremely low survival rate with K-dates manufactured in four different subvariations. All saw extensive early German Army use with examples in original condition being among some of the most desirable Nazi Luger pistols. This example is classified as a Sub-Variation 2 and has the mixed script and Gothic markings. There were only 3,550 of this variation manufactured out of the estimated 10,930 K-date Luger pistols. These pistols are found in the 1,700-5,250 serial number range, putting this example about in the middle of the production. This example has the standard script "K" date mark on the chamber with the mixed script/Gothic "S/42" on the front toggle. It has standard military marked serial number on the major parts and the mixed script/Gothic proofmarks. The right side of the barrel extension has a light script "S/early boxed "O/37" acceptance stamps used by the Mauser factory along with the single eagle firing proof, and the left side of the barrel extension is numbered "2108". The underside of the barrel is numbered "2108", and the left side of the barrel has the single "boxed O/37" acceptance proof, and a small single eagle firing proof is on the right side. Fitted with a set of walnut grips, with both correctly stamped (08) on the back side. The pistol comes with two magazines, a type 1 Army magazine with a nickel plated body with an aluminum base stamped with a "Gothic/S" over "2108/O/37" acceptance proof, and the second one is an unmarked tin plated magazine with an aluminum base that is stamped with an "Eagle/63" acceptance proof. It is accompanied by an equally scarce all black leather 1934 dated Luger holster that includes takedown tool numbered "4571" with a O/37 acceptance proof and a short 4 inch, steel cleaning rod. The back side of the holster is stamped "AUWAERTER&BUBECK/A.G./STUTTGART/1934" with a faint Waffenamt proof.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 80% plus of the blue finish remaining overall with holster wear visible on the muzzle, front frame rails, and side plate and light oxidation on the grip straps. The smaller parts retain 75% plus of their bright original straw colors with slightly more in the protected areas. The grips are in excellent condition with distinct checkering on both sides showing some minor light handling marks and some minor nicks/chips along the lower edges. The leather holster is in fine condition with a nice black outer finish, tight stitching overall, and clear, distinct markings on the back side. The face of the holster does shows some minor age cracking with wear and finish loss on the back edges of the holster, edges of the magazine pouch and toe area.
