A total of 30,362 Smith carbines were purchased by the U.S. during the Civil War. Smith carbines utilized gas sealing India rubber cartridges and were considered to be accurate and reliable weapons by many of the cavalrymen they were issued to, especially early on. Unfortunately, the Ordnance Department switched to less expensive paper and foil cartridges leading to decrease reliability. Many of these carbines were sold on the open market after the war and were used for hunting and defense throughout the country. It has standard markings and features including the matching serial number on the receiver and barrel at the hinge and two cartouches on the wrist.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with 95% plus original blue and casehardened finish, minor scratches and marks. Excellent wood with crisp cartouches and generally minor age and storage related wear. Some flaking of the nitre blue visible on the barrel band. Mechanically excellent.
