Description:

Manufactured in 1877. The carbine has the distinctive brass receiver, round barrel with full length magazine, barrel band with integral front sight, saddle ring and staple on the left side of the frame and walnut stock with crescent brass buttplate with compartment. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address/King's Improvement patent dates. and the serial number is marked in script on the lower tang behind the lever catch. The bolt retains its original rimfire firing pin (partially absent). There is also a two leaf folding carbine rear sight and smooth forearm and straight grip stock. The stock has fancy "AOS" monogram cartouche on the left side. "AOS" is repeated in small font on the underside of the stock. Experts believe that "AOS" was a marking applied to some of the nearly 12,000 Model 1866 carbines in 135,000-148,000 serial number range that were sold to a location in South America (possibly Argentina) in 1877. This marking is described on page 65 of "The Winchester Book" by George Madis. Comes with a three piece cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The otherwise crisp barrel and magazine tube have a smooth dark artificial plum patina over light pitting. The fine receiver and buttplate have a highly attractive butterscotch color with some minor handling marks. Traces of original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. There is some minor pitting mostly on the magazine tube and lever. The wood is also very good with some surface chipping and minor dings and scratches. The stock markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Brandhorst Collection.
