Description:

Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with color casehardened receiver. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes "Model 1886, serial number 83497" as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 40/60, Barrel Type: Octagon, Trigger: Plain" and "Checkered stock, Pistol grip". The letter states this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on September 14, 1893. This rifle has a full octagon, 26-inch barrel with full length magazine. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and buckhorn, sporting style, rear sight with screw-adjustable center-piece and serrated edges. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "40-65 W.C.F.", is stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. A Lyman folding combination sight with coarse knurled post is mounted on the receiver tang. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger and the serial number, "83497", is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the tang screws. The barrel and magazine have the Winchester commercial blue finish. The bolt and loading gate are the Winchester high polish blue. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are casehardened with fiery case colors. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe, highly figured, "XXX" fancy grade walnut with a piano finish and Winchester "Style H" factory checkering. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. This rifle is a stunning example of the craftsmanship that made the Winchester Repeating Arms Company famous.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. This outstanding rifle is all original and retains at least 97% of the blue and vivid color casehardened finish. The barrel and magazine have 98% of the Winchester commercial blue with crisp edges and sharp markings. The bolt retains 98% of the high polish blue. The loading gate shows traces of handling wear and has 95% of the bright blue finish. The receiver retains nearly all of the fiery case colors. The case colors on the forearm cap and buttplate are slightly more subdued but at least 95% remains. The buttplate has traces of finish wear on the edge of the heel and some silvering and age spots on the edge of the toe. The hammer has some light cycling wear, and the contact points on the bottom of the lever are slight frosted. Both the hammer and lever have close to 95% of the case colors remaining. The highly figured, fancy grade walnut stock and forearm are in excellent plus condition and retains 95% of the original piano finish. The checkered panels on the pistol grip and forearm show minimal handling wear. The stock and forearm show scattered and very insignificant handling marks. This is a stunning example of a Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with highly desirable casehardened receiver in excellent plus condition. It would be difficult to find a better example of a deluxe Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle.
