Description:

Manufactured in 1886. The factory letter confirms the rifle configuration, 32/40 caliber #3 30 inch part-octagon barrel (currently 28 inch), plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock with cheek piece and Swiss buttplate, mid-range and Vernier wind gauge sights, that it was received in the warehouse on June 10, 1886 and shipped out the next day. The letter also states it was repaired and returned on November 11, 1886 (writer believes the aforementioned notation explains the shorter 28 inch barrel). It has the two-line address on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight, "CAL 32-40" at the breech and the bottom flat just ahead of the forearm is marked "3". The patent date is marked on the lower tang directly behind the trigger and the serial number follows. Spirit level front sight, adjustable buckhorn rear sporting sight and mid-range Vernier tang mounted sight. Blue barrel, casehardened "octagon top" receiver and lever, and mounted with a type "H" checkered fancy walnut forearm with ebony forend insert, and pistol grip stock with a ebony grip cap insert, cheek piece and nickel plated Swiss buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 75% original blue finish with some mild muzzle and edge wear and some thinning. The receiver retains 70% original bright case colors showing some discoloration. The lever shows strong original case colors on the sides and a smooth mottled patina on the balance. 95% of the original frosted nickel finish remains on the buttplate. The wood is also very fine with a few scattered minor dings and dents and crisp checkering. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
