Description:

This Colt Model 1861 Navy revolver was manufactured in 1865. This commercial revolver was finished blue on the barrel and cylinder, casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer, silver-plated brass trigger guard and back strap. The one-piece walnut grip has a varnish finish. The revolver has the standard, three screw frame with capping groove in recoil shield cut-out. The top of the barrel is marked: "- ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-". The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy scene and "COLTS PATENT NO.599". "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped on the left side of the frame. The designation, "36 CAL", is located on the left side of the trigger guard at the junction of the grip and the frame. The matching serial number is located on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. The Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver is widely considered to be the most attractive and best designed of all Colt percussion revolvers. The late introduction of the model and destruction of the Colt factory in the 1863 fire limited Colt Model 1861 production. Formerly in the Will Hoffeld collection, purchased from Denny Foreman.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 60% of the original thinning blue finish mixed with smooth brown patina. The cylinder has a smooth grayish brown patina with some very minor flash pitting around the nipple recesses and minor pitting on the face. The loading lever and frame show strong original fading case colors with the balance having a smooth mottled brownish patina. The brass has an aged patina with strong original silver in the protected areas of the trigger guard. The grips are very good with 90% original finish, some wear on the lower edges and overall some minor dents and dings. The markings and cylinder scene are clear. The action is fine.
