Description:

These "Model 5" variants of the Colt Model 1855 were manufactured in 1862 (A) and 1863 (B) and have extensive scroll engraving with punch dot backgrounds. The engraving patterns are very similar on each revolver and also are also very similar to examples pictured in "The Book of Colt Engraving" by R.L. Wilson in the chapter "The Gustave Young Scroll c. 1852-1869." See especially the revolvers on the bottom of page 74 which has the details clearly illustrated and closely matches these revolvers both in terms of engraving and features. Both have "ADDRESS COL. COLT/NEW-YORK U.S.A." on top of the breech section of the barrels, the patent marking in one of the cylinder flutes, "31 CAL" on the right side of the frames under the hammer, and matching serial numbers visible on the barrels and butts. The "B" gun also has "IE" by the serial number on the butt. In addition to the revolvers, the rosewood presentation case also contains a Colt patent bullet mold, two reproduction cartridge packs (one with loose bullets, one sealed), powder flask, two "L" combination tools, cap tin, and a key.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 90% plus original silver plating, 75% original gold, dark aged patina on the silver, oxidation in the recessed areas and on the back strap, crisp markings and engraving, and mild overall wear that appears mostly to be from age. The grip is also very fine and has natural tones and grains, some light scratches, and very minor age cracks. The arbor pin release is jammed; otherwise, mechanically fine. The case is fine and has moderate age and storage related wear such as scratches and dings on the exterior, fading on the lining, a few "shattered" cracks visible on the dividers, and slight corner separation. The accessories are fine and have mild wear such as some scattered dark corrosion/oxidation on the bullet mold.
