Description:

This Factory cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver was owned by Assistant Surgeon William W. Kinne of the 90th New York Infantry Regiment. This revolver is inscribed: "Wm Kinne" on the butt. The 90th New York Infantry was organized in December 1861 and served in Key West, Florida from January-November 1862. The regiment was subsequently stationed in Beaufort, South Carolina and New Orleans, Louisiana. While in Louisiana the regiment fought in the siege of Port Hudson in 1863 and the Red River Campaign in 1864. Following the campaigns in Louisiana, the 90th New York fought in General Phillip Sheridan's Valley Campaign in 1864. The regiment mustered out of service in Georgia in 1866. The 90th New York lost 2 officers and 58 enlisted men killed in action and had 7 officers and 181 enlisted men died of disease. Documents included with the pistol indicate that William Kinne was appointed assistant surgeon of the 90th New York Regiment in December 1861. While stationed at Key West, Surgeon Kinne contracted disease and returned to New York where he was honorably discharged on June 29, 1862. This revolver was manufactured in 1861 and has a four-inch barrel with loading lever, six-shot cylinder and round brass trigger guard. The barrel is roll-engraved with the late style legend: "ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK US AMERICA" in one line. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT". "COLTS/PATENT" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. The barrel has a brass pin front sight and the hammer has hand-cut knurling on the spur. The full serial number is stamped on: (1) the barrel lug, (2) frame, (3) trigger guard, (4) back strap and (5) cylinder. The partial serial number "3528" is stamped on the loading lever and cylinder pin and. "93528" is stamped on the wedge. All of the serial numbers match. The barrel and cylinder have the Colt commercial blue finish. The loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened. The brass trigger guard and back strap are silver plated. The wedge, screws and trigger are fire blue and the one-piece walnut grip has a varnished piano finish. The mahogany case has five compartments lined with red velvet. The case contains: (1) Pocket Pistol sized powder flask with fixed charger embossed on one side with stars, eagle and shield, crossed revolvers and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" ribbon, (2) brass, straight leg, double cavity .31 caliber bullet mold stamped "COLTS/PATENT" across the top in two lines, (3) 250 count tin of W.C. Eley percussion caps with green paper label and (4) assorted .31 caliber lead ball and conical bullets. Included with the revolver and case is a framed 8 1/2-inch by 7 1/2-inch picture of Assistant Surgeon William Kinne wearing what appears to be a Grand Army of the Republic Badge, a copy of research on William Kinne's military service by "Washington-Lee & Associates" and a letter from the U.S. Army Military History Institute at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, that indicates that a photograph of William Kinne is located in the Institute files.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 80% of the blue, 60% casehardened and 90% silver-plated finish. The barrel has 90% of the Colt commercial blue finish with light edge wear, a few scattered spots of surface discoloration and several shallow dents on the right side of the lug near the wedge slot. The Colt legend on the top flat is crisp. The cylinder retains nearly all of the Stagecoach Holdup scene. The front face of the cylinder, percussion nipples and rear cylinder face show moderate flash pitting. Four of the six cylinder pins remain mostly intact. The brass trigger guard and back strap retain 85% of the tarnished silver-plated finish. Traces of fire blue finish are visible on the wedge, trigger and screw heads. The one piece grip is excellent and retains 90% plus of the varnished piano finish with a few scattered and very insignificant handling marks. The action is crisp and functions well. The case is in good overall condition. There is a water stain on the top. The velvet lining is faded with compression marks and oil stains from contact with the revolver. The lining on the muzzle end of the case is torn from contact with the revolver front sight pin. The powder flask is in good condition with 70% of the brown lacquer finish on the body and a dark patina on the brass top and charger. The bullet mold has a good looking patina with crisp markings and some shallow dents on the sides. The Eley cap tin is in good overall condition. The green paper label remains 85% intact with some discoloration and a few chips. This is a very good example of a factory cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver and accessories with historic, well documented, Civil War inscription and picture of the officer who owned the revolver. This would be a great piece for any advanced Civil War or percussion Colt collection.
