Description:

Only approximately 310 Smith & Wesson New Model 3 Australian revolvers were manufactured, all with nickel finish, 7 inch barrels, and detachable shoulder stocks. They were shipped to Australia for the Southern Australian Colonial Police and carried in holster and scabbard on horseback in the wild Australian outback. The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with a 7 inch barrel, nickel finish and hard rubber grips in a 250 unit shipment with shoulder stocks on December 14, 1881 and delivered to S&W distributor M.W. Robinson of New York, the acting agent for the Australian government. It has the two-line rib legend ending with the reissue patent date, an Australian broad arrow stamped on the butt, and matching serial numbers on the butt, right grip panel, cylinder, barrel, and barrel latch. The shoulder stock is numbered to a different gun ("12899"), has an Australian broad arrow, nickel plated hardware and S&W hard rubber buttplate. The correct and proper leather flap holster lacks visible markings. The leather stock scabbard is stamped with an Australian broad arrow and the rack number "101" on the inside. Comes with a hobbyist wooden display stand for the revolver.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 80% original nickel plating with a smooth gray patina on the balance and minimal pitting. Patterns of original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger guard. The grips are very good with minor handling marks and some worn checkering. Mechanically excellent. The stock retains 60% original nickel plating on the hardware, number of minor handing marks and a repair at the toe. The holster and scabbard are very good showing minor flex wear and handling marks. The stitching is tight overall.
