Description:

Offered here is a highly unusual, possible experimental variation to the highly desirable series of S&W .44 Double Action Revolvers. Compared to standard production S&W .44 Double Action revolvers, the uniquely altered frame on this Frontier Model revolver has a much more extremely pronounced knuckle and a larger side plate with two screws that is cut into the back strap. It is fitted with a 1 9/16 inch cylinder featuring six chambers and a double set of stop notches with free grooves between the forward notches, as encountered on standard production S&W .44 DA revolvers. The barrel rib is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking ending with "May 11 & 25 1890." Fitted with service sights (pinned round blade and notch rear sight on the barrel latch) and pearl grips. While the radical frame alteration give every appearance of being factory, per S&W historian Roy Jinks factory this revolver was "part of a large distributor shipment of this model, nothing special noted in the records."

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retaining 95% plus original nickel finish on the barrel and cylinder, frame refinished with some scattered flaking and a few patches of pitting and light spotting. 95% original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger. 90% original blue finish remains on the trigger guard. The grips are fine as slightly undersized with minimal handling evidence and fiery colors. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
