Description:

The accompanying factory letter (copy) lists this revolver with a "soft" finish which indicates it was left in the white for engraving outside the factory, .45 caliber chambering, barrel not listed (indicating 7 1/2 inch long, barrel was shortened to the present length of 4 7/8 inches), and type of stocks not listed when shipped to Hartley & Graham of New York City on October 11, 1882. The elaborate engraving pattern on this SAA was done by the 19th century's best known Master Engraver L.D. Nimschke, who signed his work "LDN/ENG" on the front of the frame. It is rare that we catalog work actually signed by Nimschke. Nimschke's masterful signature foliate arabesque pattern covers nearly all of the surfaces and incorporates his famous animal heads on the left side of the barrel (bear), left side of the frame (wolf), recoil shield (buffalo), loading gate (steer), and cylinder (dog). The inclusion of animal heads is a departure from Nimschke's standard approach to the SAA. Similar smoke pulls of said dog and buffalo are found in R.L. Wilson's book "L.D. Nimschke Firearms Engraver" on pages 14 and 60. Engraved zig-zag line motifs are featured on the cylinder flutes, back strap, butt, and frame sighting groove. The period shortened barrel has the one-line Hartford address (traces) and replacement front sight, the left side of the frame has the three-line patent dates marking, and the left side of the trigger guard is marked "45 CAL." Matching serial numbers are on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. Fitted with pearl grips. Comes with a period "S.P.A./CO." (unknown, likely retailer marking) marked floral tooled holster.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 50% of the period replated silver plating with the balance a smooth gray patina. Much of the engraving remains clear. The replacement grips are very good with a couple small chips near the bottom and some minor handling marks. Mechanically needs work as hammer only has three clicks. The hostler is fair with absent stitching. A rarely encountered Nimschke signed engraved SAA.
