Description:

Sold by J.P. Lower's Sons of Denver, Colorado, a continuation of one of the most famous Western retailers which was started by John P. Lower c. 1851 in Philadelphia before moving to Denver c. 1872. The knife is likely of English manufacture c. late 19th to early 20th century. 10 1/2 inch overall length and 6 inch clip point blade with false edge, marked "J.P.LOWER'S.SONS/DENVER COL." just below the spine on the left and "J.P.LOWER'S SONS/1511 LARIMER St/DENVER COL." on the left ricasso. The German silver guard is elliptically shaped and hand marked "1914" on the left of the bolster and "WH" on the right. The grips are coarsely checkered pearl with the German silver escutcheon on the left also hand marked with "WmD.H." The knife is pictured and described on p. 35 of "Bowie Knives" by William Keener. Includes the original leather sheath.

Rating Definition:

Fine, the blade is mostly a bright finish with some evidence of sharpening and a small patch of darker patina on the right ricasso. The grips are very fine with some light handling marks and crisp checkering overall. The sheath is fine with some mild wear and some light age related cracking.
