Description:

Manufactured by John Bull & Co. of Sheffield, England, likely in the mid to late 19th century. The overall length is 11 1/4 inches and the clip point blade is 7 inches. The blade is faintly etched with "NEW MEXICAN RUSTLER" surrounded by floral motifs on the left, and the left ricasso is marked "JOHN BULL & Co/SHEFFIELD". The elliptical guard is brass and the grip scales are stag with a German silver strip on the left scale. A very similar knife by Wostenholm dubbed the "California Knife" is pictured on p. 422 of " The Bowie Knife: Unsheathing an American Legend" by Flayderman. Includes a leather sheath with belt loop.

Rating Definition:

Fine, the blade is mostly bright with some scattered patches of grey and brown patinas, and a few light patches of pitting. The etching is lightly visible. The grips have some light wear and a couple minor cracks in the right panel. The sheath is fine with some mild wear and light cracking.
