Description:

The portrait case has "Grandfather/Remington" written on the lining behind the portrait. It has been attributed as Eliphalet Remington II (1793-1861), founder of Remington firearms. The man in the image has a soft smile, rather unusual for the period, and a fairly large nose. He is dressed in a nice suit and appears to be wearing a silk waistcoat. The portrait certainly has similarities to the printed portrait of Remington in the National Portrait Gallery that is listed as based on a c. 1845 portrait. Another portrait sold elsewhere and listed as supposedly of Remington looks significantly different than both the NPG print and this portrait. The facial characteristics are also somewhat similar to those of Eliphalet Remington III (1828-1924). The portrait is set in a floral pattern bound case.

Rating Definition:

The portrait is fine with a very distinct image, darkening to the right edge, and some light spotting and marks. The case is fair with detached pieces from the right edge of the cover, torn hinge, and flaking.
