Description:

This carbine is featured on page 74 in "British Non-Ordnance Military Carbines, 1750-1900" by Chisnall. It was manufactured by Joseph Gulley of Oxford Street in London circa 1800. The spear pointed bayonet was designed to give an mounted soldier an increased reach to counter the fact that a carbine had an a significantly shorter overall length than a musket with a typical socket bayonet. This long bayonet could be used by a dismounted dragoon to attack a mounted opponent. Only a small number of these carbines are known. They may have been used by the Yeomanry Cavalry. The same style of bayonet was used with the Pattern 1785 Crespi breech loading carbines, and this carbine pattern is very similar to the Crespi carbines other than the fact that they are simpler muzzle loaders. See the Crespi carbines and the muzzle loading carbine that are shown in the Royal Armories Study Collection. Jospeh Gulley is listed as a gunmaker at 252 Oxford St. in 1799-1804 and then 254 Oxford St. in 1805-33 in "Gunmakers of London 1350-1850" by Blackmore. The bayonet is around 28 1/2 inches long including the socket and has a 3 inch, leaf-shaped tip and a thumbscrew to secure it to the barrel. When the bayonet is not fixed, it is stored reversed on the muzzle with the point fitted in a compartment under the trigger guard finial. The carbine has two steel barrel bands with ramrod pipes on the left side. A third ramrod pipe is attached to the left stock flat in lieu of the side plate. The barrel has a rectangular bayonet lug that doubles as a front sight and London commercial proofs on the left at the breech. The lock plate has a fenced pan, a goose-neck cock, light border engraving, and "Gully" signed at center. The buttplate has St. Edward's Crown over "No. 2" engraved at the heel. The stock has a varnished finish and "BH" stamped just behind the trigger guard tang.

Rating Definition:

Very good with mostly bright metal, light pitting, minor staining, distinct markings, aged patina on the brass, and general minor age and storage related wear. The period revarnished stock is also very good and has some mild dents and scrapes and a small chip in the lock mortise edge by the tail of the lock. The bayonet condition matches the rest of the carbine. Mechanically fine.
