Description:

This pair of mid-19th century pistols appear to have been manufactured for a mounted military officer given the swivel mounted ramrods, lanyard loops on the pommels, and large caliber. As a matched pair of large caliber pistols with fixed rear sights, they would have also been suitable for dueling. The case has an inscription on the silver lid plaque that has been partially defaced and appears to read "Jean/Casablanca." The silver escutcheons on the top of the wrists have "JC" in Gothic style script. The barrels have dovetailed blade front sights and "FNI P LEPAGE MOUTIER A PARIS" (Finished by LePage Moutier of Paris). The upper tangs have fixed notch rear sights and "1" and "2" respectively. The locks and furniture have a French gray finish and area engraved with scrolls and borders, and the stocks have incised scroll carving and flutes on the wrist. The case also contains a wooden container, ball mold, screwdriver/nipple wrench, powder flask, and a bore rod.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 50% original brown finish and visible Damascus twist patterns on the barrel, gray finish and patina on the lock and furniture, crisp engraving, worn but legible barrel marking, mild oxidation, and general mild wear. The stock is also fine and has crisp relief carving and mild dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. The relined case has moderate scrapes and dings on the exterior, slivers absent from the edge of the interior, and general mild wear.
