A) Exceptional Alan Brown Signed, Historical African Game Scene Master Engraved .375 Magnum Holland & Holland Royal Deluxe Pinless Side lock Ejector Side by Side Double Rifle

Description:

Blued chopper lump barrels signed “HOLLAND & HOLLAND, 33 BRUTON STREET, LONDON.” and "1" in gold on the extensively scroll-engraved quarter rib with “.375 H&H MAGNUM FLANGED.” engraved on the sunken rib. The breech end of each barrel is finely chiselled in relief with foliate scrollwork wedges. Rear sights comprise one standing and one folding leaf graduated for “50” and “100” yards and each with gold inlaid center line, the front sights comprising a bead with flip over moon sight. Features automatic ejectors and the flats of the barrels are struck with London nitro proof marks with date mark “LP/87". Brush bright third fastener bolstered pinless side lock action with gold-line cocking indicator, removable firing pin discs, extended upper tang with automatic safety with gold-inlaid “SAFE”, gold inlaid "1" on the top lever, articulated checkered front trigger, and rolled edge trigger guard with the serial number inlaid in gold. Each side lock is masterfully engraved with historical African hunt scenes and signed by the engraver "A.M. BROWN" of the famous Brown Brothers, featuring a pair of hunters retrieving a hippo from the water on the right lock, a scene taken from Roualeyn Gordon Cumming's, "Five Years of a Hunter's Life", a pack of hounds on the tail of a lion with hunters in pursuit on the left lock, and a Maasai warrior escaping up a tree from a cape buffalo below on the underside of the action. The finely executed game scenes are surrounded by deep scroll engraving with relief engraved fences. Finely figured walnut pistol grip stock with raised cheekpiece, finely checkered grip and forearm with engraved forend fittings with gold inlaid "1" and engraved blued steel and horn grip cap, blank gold initial oval, and a scroll-engraved steel skeleton butt plate with stippled bare butt and inlaid engraved praying mantis scene. A pair of blued sling mounts complete the rifle. Length of pull 14 5/8 inches; weight 9 lbs. 14 oz.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% of the original blue finish remaining on the barrels. The brush bright finish remains like new and untarnished. Only the slightest handling marks are visible on the wood. Mechanically excellent.

BROWN" of the famous Brown Brothers, featuring a knocked down hunter taking a last chance shot on a charging bull elephant on the right lock, possibly Charles John Anderson, a mounted hunter taking aim at a charging rhino on the left lock from William Charles Baldwin's "African Hunting, from Natal to the Zambesi", and a hunter escaping the jaws of a crocodile on a river bank on the underside of the action, also from from William Charles Baldwin's "African Hunting, from Natal to the Zambesi." The finely executed game scenes are surrounded by deep scroll engraving with relief engraved fences. Finely figured walnut pistol grip stock with raised cheekpiece, finely checkered grip and forearm with engraved forend fittings with gold inlaid "2" and engraved blued steel and horn grip cap, blank gold initial oval, and a scroll-engraved steel skeleton butt plate with stippled bare butt and inlaid engraved mongoose and snake fight scene. A pair of blued sling mounts complete the rifle. Length of pull 14 5/8 inches; weight 10 lbs. 13 oz.

Each sidelock is masterfully engraved with historical African hunt scenes and signed by the engraver "A.M. BROWN" of the famous Brown Brothers, featuring a pack of hounds running two warthogs with hunters both on horseback and on foot on the right lock, a mounted hunter running alongside an ostrich on the left lock from William Charles Baldwin's "African Hunting, from Natal to the Zambesi," and a dismounted hunter taking aim at a lion on the underside of the action, Roualeyn Gordon Cummin from the frontpiece of "A Hunter's Life In South Africa". The finely executed game scenes are surrounded by deep scroll engraving with relief engraved fences. Finely figured walnut pistol grip stock with raised cheekpiece, finely checkered grip and forearm with engraved forend fittings with gold inlaid "4" and engraved blued steel and horn grip cap, and a scroll-engraved steel skeleton butt plate with stippled bare butt and inlaid engraved pangolin scene. A pair of blued sling mounts complete the rifle. Length of pull 15 inches; weight 18 lbs. 9 oz. This set was ordered in the early 1980s. Never had a rifle in .700 caliber been previously built. Many years went into the development of the .700 caliber, and this story is retold in the included article “The .700 Holland & Holland Nitro Express: How One Hunter’s Dream Rifle became a Reality” featured in Gun Digest.

Excellent with nearly all of the original finish remaining. Only the slightest handling marks are visible on the wood. Mechanically excellent.
