Description:

This was the model used by Custer and the Fifth Cavalry during the Battle of Gettysburg. 11,470 were manufactured and delivered in 1863 and 1865. 1,215 were altered after the war at Springfield Armory in 1867 to 1874 to fire 50 rimfire ammunition and were fitted with the Stabler cut-off. Spencers were easily among the most advanced weapons of the Civil War and remained in use during the late-19th century Indian Wars in the hands of both the U.S. Army and various Native Americans. Few have any finish left, let alone the vibrant case colors that remain on this solid example. It has the standard markings and features including a "TJS" cartouche on the left flat. T.J. Stevenson was an inspector at Springfield in the 1870s.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished with 85% plus of the case colors remaining on the receiver and lock, traces of blue finish, and primarily smooth gray patina on the balance. There is some very light spotting and minor marks. The wood is fine and has some minor chips and slivers absent at the edges and scattered dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
