Description:

This is a very fine example of a Pachmayr Custom Presentation Winchester Model 21 Double barrel shotgun. Frank A. Pachmayr was a German born second generation Master Gunsmith, known for being one of the first to make improvements to the Colt Government Model, and his lavishly embellished presentation guns. Blue Winchester Proof Steel chopper lump barrels with 2 3/4 inch chambers, automatic ejectors, matted, ventilated rib marked "CUSTOM MADE by PACHMAYR", dual steel bead sights, "FULL/MOD" marked chokes, gold inlaid bands at the muzzles, and 3 1/2 inch wedges of fine floral scroll engraving surrounding gold inlaid dog heads at the breech ends of the barrels. The flat-side receiver has been altered to include side clips and false side plates with standard markings on the water table, jewelled breechface and table, single gold washed trigger with selector, and automatic sliding tang safety with gold inlaid "SAFE" marking. The receiver and side plates are highly embellished with flowing floral and scroll designs, and thin, gold wire inlaid borders surrounding detailed game bird, dog, and hunting scenes rendered in both yellow and white gold. Featuring a dog stalking a pheasant on the right, a dog retrieving a quail on the left, an impressive hunter, dog, and duck scene on the underside, and another gold inlaid duck on the trigger guard. There is very little surface area that has not received some type of embellishment. Checkered, highly figured walnut pistol grip stock and beavertail forearm with carved fleur de lis accents, matching engraved and gold inlaid fittings, roller latch, inset gold grip cap inscribed "DONATED BY/NAN & FRANK/PACHMAYR/TO/DUCKS UNLIMITED", and a solid rubber Pachmayr Old English pad. Barrel and stock measurements are: bore diameter at 9 inches from breech .732/.731; choke constriction .038/.011; minimum wall thickness .032/.032; drop at comb 1 9/16 inches; drop at heel 2 1/8 inches; length of pull 14 5/8 inches.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine as embellished and customized by the famous Pachmayr firm with 97% high quality blue finish on the barrels, crisp, distinct engraving, and some scattered light surface nicks and handling marks. The receiver has some light edge wear on the side clips, and some small spots of absent gold in the borders, otherwise the engraving is highly detailed and sharp. The trigger has lost most of its gold wash and is now a bright silver. The wood is also very fine with some gapping around the forearm hardware, attractive figure, sharp checkering, and some scattered small dings. Mechanically excellent.
