Description:

Designed by Admiral John Dahlgren for use with the Model 1861 Plymouth Rifle, the intention of the Dahlgren Bowie was to replace the then-standard sword length bayonet with something more maneuverable in tight quarters for boarding actions, shore landings, and similar encounters, either on the rifle as a conventional bayonet or in-hand as a big, beefy fighting knife. While the concept didn't take off at the time, the knife-style bayonet came into its prime in the 20th century and remains the de-facto military standard. 16 1/2 inches overall, with an 11 7/8 inch asymmetrical clip point blade, marked "USN/D.R/1864" and "(anchor)/P/GG" on the right ricasso and bearing the Ames address on the left. Brass and wood grip, with a "DR" cartouche on the pommel. Leather sheath, with a brass throat and tip.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine overall. The excellent blade shows some light spotting and handling marks, with a generally bright original polish, and the hilt shows a well aged mixed "mustard" patina, with mild handling marks overall. The fine grip shows some dents and scratches, along with a small hole on the right side near the pommel. The sheath is very fine, with one rivet absent and three rivets loose on the tip, and mild scuffing.
