Description:

The accompanying factory letter lists this pistol with a 3 3/4 inch barrel in .32 caliber, blue finish, factory engraving and pearl stocks (currently synthetic pearl) when charged to Colt's presentation account and shipped to William Allen Cullop (address unknown) on June 10, 1912. The elegant minimalist factory engraving consists of floral scrollwork on a punch dot background and zig-zag line motifs. A fan pattern is engraved on the rear of the slide, and a floral blossom is engraved on the rear of the frame. The left side of the trigger guard has a Colt triangle proof and "R." William Allen Cullop (1853-1927) of Indiana had a long public service career. He was admitted to the bar in 1881, served as prosecuting attorney of the 12th Judicial Circuit from 1883 to 1886, was a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives from 1891 to 1893, a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions (1892 and 1896) and was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1909 to 1917. After he was unable to secure renomination for the election of 1916, Cullop returned to practicing law in Indiana.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining nearly all of the period reapplied blue finish with pitting under the finish, recut markings and limited handling marks. The modern replacement grips show only the slightest handling marks. Mechanically excellent. A Model 1903 pistol documented as factory engraved and presented to a sitting member of the U.S. Congress.
