Description:

This Springfield Armory M1C sniper rifle was manufactured in 1945 and overhauled by Springfield Armory in 1951. This rifle was one of 68 M1C rifles sold by the CMP at auction in July 1999. When received from CMP the rifle was sealed in a plastic VCI envelope dated July 1995. This rifle was sold complete with all the Basic Issue Items (BII) listed on an Anniston Army Depot checklist included with the rifle. All required BII was issued with the rifle with the exception of the sight telescope mount assembly which was noted on the checklist. The correct Griffin & Howe mount assembly and M82 scope were subsequently added to the rifle. The listed BII were contained in sealed packages stamped with 1970-76 packing dates. The rifle is complete with all the packing material, issued BII with original packages and CMP documentation including BII list, auction notification, bill of sale and box. The rifle is offered for sale by the original consignor and has never been fired since received from CMP. The rifle and components have the dark, gray green Springfield Armory parkerized finish. The face of the barrel chamber is bright. The M82 scope, Griffin & Howe detachable scope mount and rings have the original commercial blue finish. The stock, handguard and forearm are matching, oil-finished black walnut. The left side of the stock is stamped with the Springfield Armory open box "SA" inspection mark, and the inside of the pistol grip is stamped with an encircled, block "P" proof mark. The serial number "3665884" is stamped on the receiver heel and on the bottom of the telescopic sight base ("receiver bracket"). The "3" in the serial number on the receiver bracket has a flat top which indicates the bracket was numbered by Griffin & Howe following installation on the rifle in 1945 and that this is a WWII production M1C with original receiver bracket that was re-barreled at Springfield Armory in 1951 for the Korean War. The right side of the barrel chamber is stamped "S-A-10-51" with a "P" proof mark. The rifle has a stamped SA trigger guard, the post-war T105 rear sights, "D35382 SA" operating rod with relief cut and poppet valve gas cylinder lock screw. All of the components have Springfield "SA" drawing numbers. The blued scope mount is stamped with two serial numbers: "3448905" which is lined out and "3373861". The M82 telescopic sight has a tapered post reticle, sliding sunshade and original black rubber eyepiece. The left side of the scope body is roll-stamped: "TELESCOPE M82/SERIAL No. 536/STOCK NO. F001-0084688". The stock number indicates that the scope was manufactured by the Wollensak Optical Co. during World War II. The adjustment knob platforms, covers and other components are stamped with assembly numbers. The rifle has the World War II milled flash hider marked: "SA/FLASH HIDER M2" on the bottom of the mount. The russet leather sniper cheekpiece furnished with this rifle has no markings. Manufactured in 1945, the M1C Sniper Rifles experienced accuracy problems associated with installation of the receiver bracket and were issued too late for service during WWII. Nearly all of the M1C rifles were subsequently rebuilt in 1951-53. The M1C was the primary Army and Marine sniper rifle during the Korean Conflict. In the 1960s, nearly all of the M1C rifles were destroyed or furnished to allied military forces. Nearly all of the M1C rifles remaining in the Army inventory were destroyed during the early 1990s. In 1994, the CMP located several hundred M1C rifles that were sold at auctions in 1996 and 1999. None of the auctioned M1C rifles were in the original World War II configuration, and only a few had receiver brackets serial numbered to the rifle. M1C rifles sold by CMP since the 1999 auction have been incomplete, restored M1C rifles or M1C rifles that were overhauled in the 1950s and subsequently recovered by CMP from Turkey, Greece or the Philippines.

Rating Definition:

Near new as overhauled at Springfield Armory in 1951. This rifle was in un-issued condition when received from CMP and was never fired by the consignor after receipt. The metal components retain 99% of the Springfield Armory parkerized finish. The only noticeable wear are traces of finish loss on the buttplate toe and heel. The surfaces of the receiver are smooth with crisp heel markings. The walnut stock, handguard and forearm match perfectly and remain in new condition with perfect proof and "SA" inspection marks. The M82 Telescopic sight retains 98% of the original blue finish with almost no handling wear. The optics are perfect. The Griffin & Howe rings and mount have 98% of the commercial blue finish. All of the BII included with the rifle is present. The sling, cheekpiece, flash hider, scope case and several other items have been opened, but all of the BII retain the original dated packaging. The dated sealed VCI rifle envelope is in the original CMP shipping carton. The 1999 CMP auction description, equipment's lists and CMP bill of sale are all included with the rifle. This rifle is one of the very best M1C rifles sold by the CMP in the 1999 and 1996 auctions and the best Korean War M1C sniper rifle offered for sale by the Rock Island Auction Company.
