Description:

This M1 Grand rifle was manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company c. September 1944. This rifle was sold by the Civilian Marksmanship Program as one of the first "Collector Grade" M1 rifles in September 1998. Collector Grade rifles were unaltered, original M1 rifles with original finish and components. This rifle has the Winchester gray green parkerized finish on the barrel, receiver and other components. The distinctive Winchester "wide base" gas cylinder has the blue-tinted Du-Lite finish with early round top lock, single slot gas cylinder screw and distinctive Winchester front sight with wide ears and punchmark on the left side. The buttplate and elevation knob screws are blued. The receiver heel has the standard Winchester markings and the right side of the receiver is stamped with the drawing number "D28291-2". The receiver has the locking bar rear sight with rounded lockbar ends. The windage and elevation knobs have the Winchester open arrow direction markings. The rear sight base and cover are stamped with the Winchester punchmarks. The right side of the barrel chamber is stamped with inverted markings consisting of the oval "W/P" proofmark followed by "10" and "T" reading from the muzzle to the breech. The barrel gas port is not chromed. The top of the bolt is marked: "D28287-1 W.R.A." The "slant cut" operating rod is marked "D35382 W.R.A." and lacks the post-war relief cut. The left side of the trigger housing is marked: "28290-W.R.A.". The trigger housing has the milled trigger guard marked: "C46025 W.R.A". The right side of the hammer is marked: "C-46008-1W.R.A." The flat top/no hole safety is stamped "WRA-1" on the right side. The bottom of the follower is stamped "13". The unmarked operating rod catch, follower arm and bullet guide are all stamped with the Winchester punchmark. The milled, one-piece, follower rod is stamped with an "A" on the side. The forged, arched, lower barrel band is secured by a solid lower band pin. The short barrel channel stock has the V-notch in the trigger guard lock up area, arched operating rod cut and buttplate with distinct border. The left side of the stock is stamped with a crisp boxed "WRA/GHD" inspection mark followed by a .470-inch Ordnance cross cannon escutcheon. An encircled, serif "P" proof mark is stamped on the inside of the pistol grip. The rifle is complete with web sling, original CMP shipping carton, CMP sales receipt and CMP serial numbered "Certificate of Authenticity".

Rating Definition:

Excellent. This rifle remains in the original un-altered and unrestored condition received from CMP. The barrel receiver and other components retain 95% of the Winchester parkerized and Du-Lite finish. The receiver has the typical machine marks that are characteristic of Winchester receivers. The stock, handguard and forearm are excellent overall and retain 95% of the original oil finish. The Ordnance final inspection marks, escutcheon and proof mark are all crisp with minimal handling wear. The only significant wear on the stock is several shallow marks on the sides of the forearm apparently caused by contact with elevation or windage knobs during shipping. This is an excellent example of a scarce World War II Winchester M1 Garand rifle that remained in possession of the consignor from the receipt of the rifle from CMP in 1998 until offered for sale by Rock Island Auction Company.
