Description:

Manufactured in the 1930s, this pistol can be seen on page 130 of the book "Walther Volume III" by James Rankin, with a description on the preceding page. In the book, Rankin notes that only two "high capacity" PP pistols are known to American collectors, one with an 11-round magazine and this example, which was reportedly claimed as a war trophy by an American GI straight from the Walther factory. Little hard data is available on the "why" of these pistols; one legend puts them as a custom request by Fritz Walther himself for a family member, or they could have been a special order or prototype item. In form and function this 10-shot PP closely follows the standard factory pattern, but with the frame stretched to accommodate a longer magazine, a slight flare to the bottom of the front strap, a checkered back strap and a pair of properly lengthened hardwood grip panels with a lightly raised right handed thumb rest. Examination suggests that Walther started with a standard PP frame, and then permanently attached an extension of about a half inch via welding prior to finish. The overall shaping and profile suggests that the factory used their in-house "Olympia" sport/target line of handguns as inspiration and guide for this handgun. A 90 degree safety and cartridge indicator are installed on the slide, which has the standard Walther banner, address and model markings on the left, a "crown/N" proof on the right, and the number "014" hand-scribed on the inside. Neither the barrel or frame are proof marked. Included with the pistol are two very scarce nickel finished magazines, extended to match the frame and unmarked; one of these magazines (and based on the wear visible in the picture, the very magazine installed in this pistol) can be seen on page 217 of "Walther Volume III" as well.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, with 98% plus of the bright original factory high polish blue finish, showing some small patches of textured brown spotting on the front of the slide, bright edge wear and mild handling marks. A few small spaces or voids are visible at the front strap where the original frame meets the extension. The grips are also excellent, with a few tiny edge chips and mild pressure dents. Mechanically excellent.
