Description:

Manufactured in the 1930s, this pistol is identified by serial number and discussed on page 129 of the book "Walther Volume III" by James Rankin (along with an equally rare 10-shot PP, in the previous lot). In the book, Rankin notes that only two "high capacity" PP pistols are known to American collectors, this example and a 10-round model which was reportedly claimed as a war trophy by an American GI straight from the Walther factory. Little hard data is available on the "why" of these pistols; they could have been a special order or prototype item, with one legend putting the 10-shot PP as a direct request from Fritz Walther himself for presentation to a family member. In form and function this 11-shot PP closely follows the standard factory pattern, but with the frame stretched to accommodate a longer magazine, a slight flare to the bottom of the front strap, and a pair of properly lengthened hardwood grip panels with a lightly raised right handed thumb rest. Examination suggests that Walther started with a standard PP frame, and then permanently attached an extension of about three quarters of an inch via welding prior to finish. The overall shaping and profile suggests that the factory used their in-house "Olympia" sport/target line of handguns as inspiration and guide for this handgun. A 90 degree safety and cartridge indicator are installed on the slide, which has the standard Walther banner, address and model markings on the left, a "crown/N" proof on the right, and the matching number "410" hand-scribed on the inside. The frame is "crown/N" proofed in the chamber area, and the barrel is unmarked. Included with the pistol are a total of four very scarce nickel finished magazines, extended to match the frame and unmarked; one of these magazines can be seen on page 217 of "Walther Volume III", with a 10-shot magazine and a pair of standard PP and PPK magazines for comparison.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with 75% of the original blue finish, showing a mixed brown and gray patina on the grip straps, bright edge wear, mild denting on the serrations and light handling marks overall. The front sight has been removed, with a cleanly machined flat panel on the front of the slide, and the firing pin assembly is absent. The grips are fine, with a chip absent from the top rear of the right panel, smaller chips in the left panel around the safety, and mild dents and scratches. Aside from the noted absent components, the pistol is in fine mechanical order. A true rarity in Walther collecting, and perhaps the only one of its kind in the United States.
