Description:

This is a fine example of a mid-production DWM Model 1902 Luger carbine that is complete with it's original matching walnut shoulder stock. Approximately 2,500 were manufactured. All these early carbines exhibit the very desirable early features such the long frame, flat mainspring, grip safety, dished toggles, toggle lock on the right side, recessed/flat breech bolt, and flat straw colored extractor. One of the most unique features is the 11 3/4 inch carbine barrel with a detachable checkered forearm. The underside of the barrel is fitted with a small lug that engages a small spring actuator located inside the forearm that helps to cycle the heavier carbine barrel during firing. No other Luger has this feature. The top of the chamber is blank, and the front toggle has the standard DWM logo. Fitted with the correct 3-position rear sight (adjustable from 100-300 meters) and a small ramp front sight base fitted with a bead front sight. The full serial number (24450) is correctly marked on the frame extension and barrel underside. The last digits of the serial number (450 or 50) are discretely marked on the various parts in the correct commercial manner. Fitted with a set of original and correct checkered walnut grips (left one stamped with a small asterisk on the back side, the right one unnumbered). It is complete with an original matching numbered walnut shoulder stock that has a fine checkered pattern in the grip area and horn buttplate. The top of the attaching iron is numbered "450". Sling swivels are correctly mounted on the underside of the stock and the small forend. Comes with one original commercial magazine with a correct unnumbered wood base and two spare magazines (one is a WWI era wood base military magazine, the other is a post WWI commercial magazine with a wood base stamped "GERMANY". Accompanied by a black leather holster and stock carrier. Although neither one is marked, they are period correct and certainly could have been made in Germany or even the U.S. by one of the early importers such as Abercrombie & Fitch, H. Heiser or Lawrence. Consignor stated that his family has owned this example since 1928 and only ever fired one box of ammunition.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus of the original blue finish overall with blue loss visible on the side plate hump, front edges of the frame rails, muzzle area and underside of the barrel where it rubs on the forend. The smaller parts retain 30% straw colors overall. The walnut grips and forend are both fine with nice original, distinct checkering mixed with some minor handling marks and a few minor nicks in the checkering. The detachable stock is very fine with a nice original finish overall. Nice distinct checkered diamonds showing minor/light wear across the tops of the checkering mixed with a few minor handling marks. The black leather holster and buttstock holster are both very good with a nice distinct black finish overall showing wear and age cracking in the flexing areas with solid stitching overall. A very fine example of a very desirable DWM Model 1902 Luger Carbine rig with scarce leather holster/carrier.
