Description:

Originally finished in a dull green, this helmet has been oversprayed in a brighter "spring" green, with variances in coverage creating differences in hue. Over this paint job, sections of the helmet have been smeared with a thick layer of dried, light brown mud. While not one of the more commonly seen and recognized Nazi camouflage styles, this sort of work does line up with known field practices; using locally available materials to break up the profile of the helmet, disrupt solid blocks of color, reduce reflections and blend in better with the local environment. Some red paint is present on the crown, but this does not appear to be a deliberate addition, and it may have been accidentally added due to hard contact with a red painted surface. No decals are present, with a set of four green painted spanner bolts holding the gray leather faced chinstraps, and light tan leather webbing marked with a faint manufacturer number and size numbers "Kopfgrosse 58/Stahlhelmgrosse 68".

Rating Definition:

Very good. The exterior of the helmet shows some mild wear and rubbing, exposing the original paint of the shell and the bright alloy color of the spanner bolt. The mud appears very solidly attached to the helmet, though it has not been tested for durability. The interior shows some minor staining, and no maker's marks are present on the chinstraps. Formerly of the collection of George Petersen, who is noted as having acquired it in the U.S. in the 1960s, suggesting a G.I. war trophy, possibly from Normandy.
