Description:

This is a desirable and colorful variation of the Second Model Schofield Single Action revolver which was first purchased by the U.S. Government, then purchased by the Wells Fargo Co., eventually used by a Hollywood prop supplier and formerly part of a U.S. Air Force general's collection. The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with a 7 inch barrel, blue finish and smooth walnut grips when shipped on October 12, 1876 and delivered to U.S. Government, National Armory, Springfield, MA. U.S. inspection markings include "E" and "P" on the barrel, "W" on top of frame under the cylinder, and "W" and "P" on the rear cylinder face. Matching serial numbers are on the butt, cylinder and right grip panel. Later, the revolver was one of a number sold as government surplus by Hartley & Graham or Bannerman who shortened the barrel to 5 inches and purchased by Wells Fargo. At some point the grip frame was altered. The grips are original and have been professionally modified to fit the contours of the rounded butt heel. The lanyard stud hole has been plugged. The Wells Fargo marking "W.F. & CO'S. EX. 4403" is partially stamped over the Schofield patent marking on the right side of the ejector housing. Following the Wells Fargo marking is the letter "S," which has been identified by S&W expert Jim Supica as the marking for the Hollywood prop supplier Stembridge Gun Rentals Inc. The revolver is fully functional, not converted to fire blank cartridges as commonly seen with guns used by Hollywood. Eventually, the gun found its way to the collection of Air Force General Bryce Poe II (1924-2000). During the Korean War Poe flew 90 combat missions including the first USAF jet reconnaissance sortie. Throughout his career he was assigned to mostly reconnaissance and logistic wings stationed in the U.S. and Europe. At the time of his retirement he was a lieutenant general commanding the Air Force Logistics Command at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. The revolver was later part of the late John Watts collection.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 40% original blue finish with a smooth brown-gray patina. Some original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger guard. The modified grips are also fine (see above) with minor dings and scratches overall. Mechanically excellent. A Schofield revolver with interesting and colorful history that will bring added dimension to any S&W collection!
