Description:

This is a fine example of a DWM Model 1902 Luger carbine. This was DWM's attempt to a produce a lightweight rifle substitute to compete with the Mauser factory for sales on the European market. There were approximately 2500 of this model manufactured in two serial number blocks with this specific pistol being in the second block. The unique feature is the 11 3/4 inch barrel with a detachable checkered forearm, which contains a small spring actuator that engages a lug on the underside of the barrel, which helps cycle the carbine during firing due to the heavier barrel. The chamber area is blank, and the front toggle has the standard DWM logo. The frame is the early style with a flat mainspring, grip safety, dished toggles, and recessed/flat breech bolt. It is fitted with the correct three position rear sight (adjustable from 100-300 meters) and a ramp front sight. The full serial number (23577) is correctly marked on the frame extension and the underside of the barrel. The last digits of the serial number (577 or 77) are marked on the various parts. It is fitted with a set of checkered walnut grips that are stamped with only an asterisk on the back side of each grip and an original matching numbered ("77") checkered walnut forearm with sling swivel. It is complete with a professionally made checkered walnut shoulder stock. The stock pattern correctly duplicates the original design to include a black plastic serrated buttplate and fine line checkering on the grip area. It has a correct style attaching iron that has been renumbered "23577" to match the Luger. It has a set of sling swivels correctly mounted on the underside of the stock and the small forend. It also comes with one original unnumbered, wood base magazine. The underside of the barrel has a very small Simpson Ltd. importer mark and it comes with a brown storage case to house the pistol and buttstock.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus of the original blue finish on the pistol itself with edge and high spot wear with some minor thinning and spotting on the sides of the barrel. The various smaller parts retain 65% of their straw colors. The grips are in very fine condition with nice distinct checkering on both sides with no handling marks. The buttstock as noted is a professionally made copy that shows no handling marks with sharp checkering with 98% of the current blue finish on the restored/renumbered lug. It has matching numbers on the various parts except the magazine as noted above. A very nice and very attractive DWM Model 1902 Luger carbine.
