Rare Smith & Wesson Model No. 3 Russian 1st Model Single Action Revolver Cut for Shoulder Stock

Gauge: 44 S&W Russian
Barrel: 8 inch solid rib

Grip: walnut

Item Views: 3897
Item Interest: Active
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 129
Class: Antique
Description:

Manufactured from 1871 to 1874 and falls within the commercial Russian range. This is a rare variation as it is one of only 604 Russian and American No. 3 revolvers combined cut for a shoulder stock, which became available upon request beginning on March 29, 1873 (see "Smith & Wesson 1857-1945 " by Robert J. Neal and Roy G. Jinks on page 171). The grip frame is cut twice, one on the back strap and once on the butt, rather than three times as seen on the 2nd and 3rd model Russians. The two-line rib address/patent dates marking ends with "RUSSIAN MODEL." Due to being cut for a shoulder stock, the butt only shows the first two digits ("26") of the serial number. The full serial number ("26451") is stamped on the back of the right grip panel. Matching assembly numbers are found on the grip frame, cylinder, barrel, and barrel latch.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 90% original nickel finish with some high edge wear and flaking. Traces of original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger guard. The grips are fine with a few compression marks on the bottom, some high edge wear and some minor handling marks. The cylinder stop does not lock, otherwise action cycles properly. A highly prized one of only 604 Old Model No. 3s cut for a shoulder stock missing from even the most advanced S&W collections. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
