Description:

Remington's rolling block rifles are commonly associated with Western hunters and foreign military orders, but they were also among the most popular long range target rifles of their day and remain popular for target shooters today. The Long Range Creedmoor Rifles were manufactured around 1873 to 1890 and were designed for competition at the famous National Rifle Association range on Long Island. This rifle was clearly designed for long range shooting and does not match the standard Long Range Creedmoor Rifle. Special ordered Creedmoor rifles could be ordered from Remington to fit a shooter's particular preferences. It has no visible markings and features an interesting band mounted globe front sight with a spirit level, no rear sight seat, a small tap on the bottom of the barrel just over a foot back from the muzzle, raised "Rigby" type flats on the breech section of the barrel and frame, a stud screwed into the right side of the frame at the front, the upper right of the breech block pin filled flush, a long range Vernier peep sight on the upper tang, a second base for the peep sight mounted at the heel, checkered forearm with a horn cap, and a deluxe checkered pistol grip stock with horn grip insert and checkered hard rubber buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good with strong traces of period refurbished blue finish near the muzzle and in the protected areas, silvered out case colors, gray and brown patina on the balance, patches of mild oxidation, and generally light wear. The refinished wood is very good and has attractive flame figure on the butt, minor scrapes in the otherwise crisp checkering, light dings, and strong varnished finish. The buttplate has a nice aged appearance and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. This rifle has aged and has moderate storage wear but appears to have been used little. It is definitely an interesting variation of the desirable Remington Long Range Creedmoor Rifles. Provenance: The John Fox Collection.
