Description:

Only a total of around 1,000 Whitney-Kennedy carbines were manufactured (divided in an unknown distribution between small and large frame variations), and most of the carbines are believed to have gone to Central and South American making them scarce in the U.S. today. This rare large/heavy frame variant was manufactured c. 1879-1883 based on the use of the earlier serpentine lever. It has a block style front sight, notch and ladder rear sight, "WHITNEYVILLE ARMORY, CT. U.S.A." on top ahead of the rear sight, "-45-60-" at the breech, a saddle ring on the left, the two-line patent marking on the upper tang, "240" on the lower tang and lever, "U' marked barrel band, smooth stock and forearm, nice flame figure on the latter, a steel buttplate with brass door, and empty stock compartment.

Rating Definition:

Fine with period refinished frame, 75% plus original blue finish remaining on the barrel and magazine tube, light tones on the frame, a plum tone on the buttplate, vibrant niter blue on the loading gate, gray and brown patina on the faded areas, minor oxidation, partially worn patent markings, and generally light wear. The forearm is fine and has glossy varnish, nice flame figure on the period refinished stock, mild dings, and some light scratches. Mechanically fine.
