The replacement blued tang number "720599" dates to 1923, the last year of production. According to the Winchester serial number manufactured date book the last serial number recorded for the Model 1873 was "720609" which would make this rifle 10 rifles from the last one manufactured. The rifle features a special order half round, half octagon barrel and casehardened forend cap, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate. Third Model receiver with integral dust cover guide rail and dust cover with serrated rear edges. Blade front and elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sights. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two line address and "44 W.C.F." at the breech. The bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is marked "44 CAL" , the upper tang is marked "MODEL. 1873" flanked by foliate devices and the serial number appears on the lower tang. Full length magazine tube, and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate with compartment containing a 4 piece cleaning rod.

Very fine as assembled. The barrel and magazine tube retain 90% original blue finish with some muzzle and edge wear, some thinning to a smooth plum patina on the magazine tube, and overall some scattered minor dings and scratches. The dust cover has been refinished blue (replaced) and shows all of the blue finish remaining with a small amount of minor pitting under the finish. The remaining parts retain 80% original bright case colors with some light spotting on the front edge of the receiver, and there are some areas of smooth gray patina. The wood is also very fine with some scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
