Description:

This Henry rifle was manufactured by Oliver Winchester's New Haven Arms Co. around 1864 and has a German silver blade front sight, notch and ladder rear sight, "HENRY'S PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." on top ahead of the rear sight, the serial number on top of the barrel at the breech, sling swivel mounts on the left side of the barrel and the buttstock, an empty cleaning rod compartment, and "D.S. Stilwagon" inscribed in script on the left side plate. The latter's identity is not documented. However, there are multiple men who match that name in records for the period, including David Smith Stillwagon (1821-1898) who was born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, and is buried in Glenwood, Iowa. There is also a Daniel Stilwagon that served in Company D. of the 102nd Regiment of Ohio Infantry during the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Very good with brown patina on the iron, strong original niter blue on some of the screws, attractive aged patina on the frame and buttplate, light scratches and marks, some mild pitting mostly confined to the lever, distinct markings and inscription, and general mild wear. The stock is fine with the desirable "Henry bump" visible on left side of buttstock, below swivel, and has some minor bruising concentrated at the heel on the left, minor dings, smooth oiled finish, and light scratches. Mechanically fine. Overall, a very attractive Henry with an interesting inscription that is likely for the original owner.
