The included Cody Firearms Records Office search form lists this rifle as serial numbered on June 12, 1894, and as a takedown rifle in .40-70 (currently in 45-70) with an octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock with shotgun butt, and Lyman front and rear sights and as received and shipped on June 15, 1894, in order 14459. It features a Lyman beaded blade front sight, the two-line address ahead of the notch and folding ladder rear sight, "45-70" on top at the breech, a tang mounted Lyman peep sight, and XX fancy grade walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with style H checkering, contrasting grip insert, and smooth steel shotgun buttplate. The left side of the lower tang has "246 XX S," and the upper tang mortise also has "246" ("4" sideways). The barrel was obviously replaced given the change in caliber unless there was an error in the ledger or the reading of the ledger.

Very fine with 80% plus original blue finish, strong original case colors and niter blue on the small parts, small spots of minor oxidation/pitting, and mostly smooth brown patina on the faded areas. The wood is very fine and has minimal loss of the original varnished finish, attractive figure, minor wear on the otherwise crisp checkering, and mild scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent.
