This is a really interesting small bore Model 1885 with a variety of special order features. The factory letter lists this rifle in .25 CF with a #1 weight 30 inch part-octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock with cheek piece, military wind gauge sight, Swiss buttplate, and no rear sight seat and as received in the warehouse on October 1, 1891, and as shipped the following day in order 9802. The grade of the wood is not listed, but the left side of the lower tang has "421 XXX SBC," and the buttstock has "XX" marked in the upper tang mortise and nice flame figure. It has the two-line address on top of the barrel at the mid-section, "25 W.C.F." on top at the breech, a small "1" on the bottom ahead of the Schnabel forearm tip which has an ebony insert, a Vernier peep sight on the upper tang, ebony insert in the pistol grip, and silver-plated brass buttplate.

Very good with 20% original blue finish, patches of original case colors, 40% original silver on the buttplate, mottled gray and brown patina on the balance of the steel, aged patina on the exposed brass, some areas of mild oxidation/pitting, and distinct markings. The wood is very good and has mostly crisp checkering, moderate scrapes and dings, and attractive figure. The set trigger needs some work; otherwise mechanically fine.
