Description:

Manufactured in 1897 per George Madis' serial number range. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .30 caliber, checkered plain pistol grip, shotgun buttplate, half magazine, takedown configuration, factory style 9 engraving at an additional cost of $4.00 and Lyman front and rear sights when shipped on April 18, 1901. The records also list a May 3, 1901 factory rework date for the rifle (does not appear to have had anything of significance done). The engraving on the sides of the receiver consist of floral scrollwork on a punch dot background, zig-zag and dot borders and game scenes inside circular panels. Light flourishes of scrollwork are included on the barrel at the breech, takedown collar, and forend cap. The barrel is stamped with the two-line address legend ahead of the rear sight and "30 WCF" at the breech on the top flat and has the two-line nickel steel marking on the upper left flat. The rifle is equipped with a dovetail blade front sight, elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight, and folding tang peep sight. The walnut forearm and pistol grip stock feature factory "I" checkering, a seldom encountered style of checkering. The buttstock has a hard rubber Winchester grip cap and shotgun buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 50% original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. 20% original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. 25% original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The engraving is crisp. There is a small chip on the buttplate at the toe. The refinished wood is fine with some minor dings and scratches and blemishes in the recut checkering. Mechanically excellent.
