Description:

Manufactured in 1894. This rifle features special order deluxe checkered wood with a pistol grip stock, Lyman tang sight and casehardened receiver. The rifle also has an octagon barrel. The accompanying Buffalo Bill Museum letter verifies the caliber, octagon barrel, checkered pistol grip stock, Lyman rear sight and casehardening. The letter further states that this was the first made in this exact configuration. There is no mention of shipping date or destination. The top barrel flat is marked with the two line address ahead of the rear sight and "32-40" at the breech. The upper tang marking is covered by the short range Lyman tang sight and the serial number is on the underside of the receiver. Dovetailed Lyman blade front sight, and there is a filler in the rear sight dovetail. Blue barrel and magazine tube, and casehardened remaining metal surfaces. Mounted with a nicely figured multi-point checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a Winchester grip cap and a crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as restored with 95% blue finish remaining, showing some thinning to a pleasant plum on the barrel. Almost all of the vivid case colors remain. There are a number of cleaning scratches on the lever assembly. The wood is very good with the forend cap a bit ill-fitting and has recut checkering, with a number of minor dents, dings and scratches. The checkering is well defined. The markings are clear and crisp. The action is excellent. Provenance: The Brandhorst Collection.
