Description:

Only 15,000 Baby Dragoon revolvers were manufactured in 1847-1850. They were Colt's first pocket model manufactured at the Hartford factory and evolved into the Model 1849 Pocket which was the most popular of all of the Colt percussion revolvers. All of the Colt Pocket Model revolvers are difficult to find in high condition given they were generally subjected to many years of use. This exceptional example was manufactured in 1849 and features a post front sight, "-ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW-YORK CITY-" on top of the barrel, the small "COLTS/PATENT" marking on the frame and cylinder, the Texas Ranger and Indian fight scene on the cylinder which has oval stops like the Colt Walker and First Model Dragoons, a squareback trigger guard marked "8" on the front left, a varnished walnut grip, and matching serial numbers on the barrel, wedge, arbor pin, cylinder, frame, trigger guard, back strap, and grip (in pencil in the mortise at the butt). The custom case contains the pistol, an Eley Bros. cap tin, a Colt patent eagle powder flask, later production added package of .36 caliber cartridges, brass bullet mold (stapled in place), and an L-shaped combination tool.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% plus original silver plating on the grip frame remaining and exhibiting a dark aged patina, 75% plus original muted case colors remaining on the frame, 85% original blue finish on the barrel, and 50% original blue finish on the cylinder. The balance has mostly light brown or gray patina. There are some mild dings and scratches concentrated around the wedge and on the cylinder, mild pitting on the muzzle and cylinder, and mild edge wear. The grip is excellent and has most of the original finish, minor edge wear, and light marks. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are all fine with mild storage wear. One will look a long time to find a better representative example!
