Description:

Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver manufactured in 1860. The octagon barrel and five-shot cylinder have a high polish, commercial blue, finish. The loading lever, frame and hammer are casehardened and have fiery case colors. The brass trigger guard and back strap are silver-plated. The one-piece grip appears to be original to the revolver. The barrel has a cone-shaped brass front sight and the hammer has a knurled spur. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Hold-Up scene and "COLTS PATENT". The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Third Style marking: "-ADDRESS SAML COLT/HARTFORD CT.-" in two lines. "COLTS/PATENT" is roll-stamped on the left side of the frame. The full serial number is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. The partial serial number "2018" is stamped on the loading lever. All of the visible serial numbers match. The mahogany, Hartford, case has five compartments and is lined with burgundy colored velvet. The case contains: brass, double cavity, .31 caliber, bullet mold marked "COLTS/PATENT" across the top, 100-cap tin of Hicks percussion caps and assortment of .31 caliber round bullets.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 80% of the blue, casehardened and silver-plated finish. The barrel has light edge wear with scattered patches of age discoloration and some shallow dents surrounding the wedge slot. The cylinder has 80% of the blue finish and retains nearly all of the stage holdup scene. The percussion nipples show only light flash pitting, and all of the safety pins are solid. The loading lever, hammer and frame retain close to 90% of the strong case colors. The brass trigger guard and back strap have 60% of the original tarnished silver-plated finish. The Colt markings and serial numbers are sharp. The grip is in very good overall condition with minimal shrinkage and has aged to a yellow-brown on the right side of the grip and is cream colored on the left side; there are several small, old scratches on the left heel. The lid is cracked; otherwise, the case exterior is in very good condition; wear is limited to a few minor handling marks and some finish loss. The interior is in good overall condition; the lining has faded to a rust brown and the lining in the bottom of the case is discolored from age. There are several tears in the lining from contact with the front sight pin. The bullet mold has been polished but remains in good overall condition. The cap tin is later production than the revolver. This is a very fine example of a Civil War period, factory cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket Model revolver.
