This attractive rolling block was manufactured c. 1868-1888 and has elaborate period engraving with geometric and floral scroll patterns on the nickel plated forend cap, barrel bands, rear sight, frame, rolling block, hammer, sling swivel, and buttplate, and the blued barrel also has some scroll engraving at the breech. The engraving was clearly done by an expert hand, possibly by L.D. Nimschke. The left side of the upper and lower tang have "E" followed by "75098." The front of the stock wrist has "22" on the right and "38" on the left, and the inside of the buttplate has "22" on the tang, "38" on the back, and a "3" on the edge. "38" is repeated on the rear sight, and "22" is also repeated on the first band spring and may also be stamped elsewhere. The forend and other bands were not removed out of caution due to their tight fit. All three barrel bands have "crown" inspection type markings (front band marked on the left). The front sight is the standard military rifle-musket style that doubles as the bayonet lug, and the rear sight is graduated "1" to "4" on the right side of the base and "5" to "10" on the front of the folding ladder. The upper tang has "REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A./PAT. MAY 3D NOV. 15TH 1864 APRIL 17TH 1866." The buttstock has some nice flame figure, and both the forearm and buttstock have a high quality semi-gloss finish. A slotted cleaning rod is fitted below the barrel.

Very fine with 98% plus period retailer applied, deep blue finish and nickel plating, smooth frosted appearance along the latter, general mild wear, and little signs of use. The wood is very fine aside from some small notches along the cleaning rod channel and has mostly smooth surfaces, minor scratches and dings from handling and storage, and nice figure. Mechanically excellent. Overall, this is easily among the attractive military pattern Remington Rolling Block rifles.
