These rifles were manufactured in limited numbers in the mid 1870s to 1880s by the Providence Tool Co. of Rhode Island for long range target shooting at the nearby Creedmoor Rifle Range on Long Island. The rifle features "Creedmoor" engraved in Gothic letters on top of the action at the breech, a scene of a running bison on the right side of the frame, a pair of dogs pursuing two stags on the left side of the frame, beautiful classic scroll engraving, "MANUFACTURED BY THE PROVIDENCE TOOL Co. PROVIDENCE, R.I. U.S.A" inscribed on the top of the barrel, and "PEABODY & MARTINI PATENTS" engraved on the trigger guard. The scene and scrollwork are consistent with work by the Ulrichs, and a rather similar bison was part of a scene engraved by Nimschke on a Ballard rifle. The breech end of the barrel is marked with "45 CAL/100 GRS" with the "5" marked over a "4" indicating it was modified from .44-100 to .45-100. It is equipped with a windgauge globe front sight, adjustable long range Vernier peep sight, second peep sight base on the heel for shooting from the back position, knurled trigger, and checkered forearm and pistol grip stock. "235" is marked on the forearm stud, bottom of the barrel, back of the forearm, and sight bases. An included copy of a notarized letter from Kenneth W. Anthony indicates this rifle was presented to James Anthony, his grandfather, by John B. Anthony, President of Providence Tool Co., "because of his efforts on behalf of the factory."

Fine. The barrel retains 75% plus original blue finish and has some light speckling and smooth brown patina on the faded areas which are mainly at the edges. The buttplate retains 50% original blue finish and has gray and brown patina on the balance along with some mild oxidation. The action retains strong patches of original case colors in the protected areas and otherwise has a mottled gray patina. The engraving and markings throughout are crisp. The stock and forearm have been refinished and have crisp checkering, a repaired crack in the toe, a divot in the checkering near the rear of the forearm, and some minor scrapes and dings. Mechanically excellent. This is a very attractive and finely engraved Creedmoor rifle.
