Very few of these high end Remington rolling block shotguns are known today. There is a similar example pictured and described on page 232 of "Steel Canvas: The Art of American Arms" by Wilson and described as manufactured in Liege for Samuel Remington as a showpiece and for his personal use while in Europe. This example also bears Liege proofs on the barrel and action. The Damascus barrel has "E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION NEW-YORK U.S.A." inlaid in gold along the rib and an absent front sight bead. The top of the action has a rendition of the Great Seal of the United States in gold surrounded by a gold inlaid border, the right side has two engraved dogs and a game bird in gold with an engraved background, the left side has two dogs and a rabbit in gold with an engraved background, the trigger guard bow has a gold inlaid fox in an engraved scene, and there are also additional engraved borders, scrolls, and accents on various components. The upper tang has "REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A./PAT. MAY 3D. NOV. 15TH 1864 APRIL 17TH 1866." "1" is marked on the left side of the lower tang and on the bottom of the barrel, and "No 1" is hand marked in script inside the forearm. "16" is marked on the front of the frame. "LP" is marked at the front of the wrist in the mortise. The butt has a trapdoor compartment for storing two shotshells. It has a 2 1/2 inch chamber, and the length of pull is 14 1/4 inches. A replacement cleaning rod is below the barrel.

Fine with bright gold inlays, smooth light brown along most of the barrel, stronger case colors in the protected areas and otherwise a mix of silver-gray and brown patinas on the balance, mostly distinct engraving, a worn section on the eagle and escutcheon, some minor oxidation/pitting, and general mild wear. The highly figured wood is also fine and has mostly smooth surfaces, a few small chips, light scrapes and dings, and general minor age and storage related wear. Mechanically excellent. This is an impressive and scarce Remington rolling block shotgun. They are among the rarest of the rolling block variations.
