Description:

The Stevens Model 51 was manufactured c. 1896-1916 and is essentially a deluxe version of the "Walnut Hill" No. 50. This specific example was specifically equipped with the following standard features: a globe front sight (absent), Vernier tang mounted rear sight, scroll engraved receiver, double set triggers, straight grip stock, deluxe checkered walnut stock and forend, short loop lever with two-piece wood panel insert, and double prong Swiss buttplate. The top flat of the heavy barrel is marked in two lines "J. STEVENS A. & T. CO. /CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A." The upper left barrel flat at the breech is marked "32.40". The bottom of the barrel has "5954" followed by a "1," and the front of the frame has "50 0." The serial number is repeated on the lower tang. The partial matching serial number "954" is hand-written on the butt. The back of the forearm has "G/954," and the bottom of the forearm has been fitted with a base with three taps for mounting a palm rest (not included). The frame has scroll, floral, and border engraving and nicely patterned casehardened finish.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine with 75% plus original blue finish on the barrel, 95% original case colors on the frame, patches of original case colors on the lever and buttplate, most of the wear on the front and bottom of the barrel, mix of gray and brown patinas on the faded areas, and mild age and storage related wear. The wood is also very fine and has crisp checkering, mostly smooth finish, some minor nicks and dings, and generally minor wear considering the age. Mechanically excellent.
