Description:

This rifle shows most of the normal characteristics of the rifles made by many manufacturers in the mid-1800s for purchase by volunteers joining the many rifle corps popping up all over Britain. These volunteer rifle corps were in response to perceived aggression from France after an assassination attempt on Napoleon III in 1858 which was partially supported by conspirators in Birmingham. The "LA Co" marked London Armoury lock is dated "1861" as well as having the traces of a Victorian cipher at the rear ("V.R" visible with the crown mostly gone). This example has a silver presentation plaque on the buttstock for 2nd prize 1st class to Armstrong Crouch of the 33rd Middlesex Rifles in October of 1862.

Rating Definition:

Very good, showing traces of the original blue finish in sheltered areas and traces of refurbished case colors on the lock with the balance of the barrel a smooth dark brown/plum patina and a smooth grey patina on the balance of the lock with some scattered light pitting. The otherwise fine wood has minor dings and scratches scattered throughout, a few minor blemishes in the overall crisp checkering, and minor cracks on the left. Mechanically excellent.
